Single hung windows

Often at times, people confuse a fixed window with a single hung window, but there is a large difference in that a single hung window has a fixed upper sash and a moveable lower sash. In this particular type of product, the lower sash can be raised to allow free airflow. In addition, the sash is sometimes designed to tilt so that it can be made easier to clean and maintain. Contrary to these, fixed windows have a single pane of glass which is stationary, and they are used in places where ventilation is not an issue. This is an advantage that a single hung window can provide, with more ventilation, circulation and air flow into any room of a house.

One factor to keep in mind about Single Hung Windows is that they do not provide the same advantage of noise insulation and environmental elements that fixed windows do. They are less sealed than fixed windows, and as such allow for noise and other elements to make their way into the home. However, the advantages may outweigh these negative factors in your selecting of single hung windows. With multiple types of products, you have the option of choosing from standalone items that can fit into existing frames, or whether you purchase a frame that can be simply dropped into place. Either way, the designs and styles can offer various options to make the best choice for your home.

Keep in mind that Single Hung Windows have a high fixed upper sash on the outside, which depending on the height of the window from the exterior, may not be reachable for cleaning and maintenance. This could offer a disadvantage and an inconvenience each time you are looking to clean the exterior of your home. With higher level storey’s in your home, this type of window may not be the best option you can make. The fixed sash may also limit options in terms of ventilation and air flow, since the upper sash cannot provide air circulation to the lower part of the room, where it may be desired the most.
